IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, I LOVE YOU

A STORY TOLD THROUGH INNACURATE MEMORIES.

available soon

Memories are mental representations of past experiences, feelings, sensations, and information that have been stored and can be recalled. They are not perfect snapshots of events but are more like dynamic reconstructions, often influenced by our emotions, perceptions, and external factors. Memories can take many forms and involve different senses, such as sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and emotions.

But… isn’t our life built upon the outcome of the experiences we lived, stored as memories?

If they aren’t a snapshot of reality, but more of a reconstruction, can we then not have mistaken those experiences? How reliable are they in reality? Can we trust them?

Should we trust them?

Julia never though of that.

She recalls a happy childhood in company of her older brother Jamie. She barely remembers when their parents left them. That’s why she doesn’t understand why his brother is suddenly mentioning them. Or why he suddenly suggests they couldn´t afford new toys when he used to get her a new one every week. Or what it means when he says that they didn´t own a TV, when she still remembers watching every Sunday morning her favorite program?

Julia has always recalled a happy childhood..

then why does it look like her brother doesn’t?

GAME BREAKDOWN

NARRATIVE

Julia remembers a happy childhood. All her memories are infused with bright colors and fun experiences. But how reliable are the memories we have from an early age?

The absence of her parents from an early age never seemed to be too big of a deal, because Jamie, her big brother promised her they would be alright.

And they were. Weren’t they?

INTERACTIONS

Julia’s first memories come from when she was 5 years old. From that point onwards, you will grow up with her, revisiting her past experiences until her present.

Every time she learns something new, that shapes the way she sees the world. Every new information bring a new perspective to past events.

A journey of memory reconstruction.

AGENCY

Scrap Memories is a first-person, single player game where you play as Julia. In the world itself you can interact with almost every object that is placed on screen. It will depend on when you interact with it, that you will learn more about the real situation of your character.

EXAMPLE: If you are too young to know how to read you won’t be able to learn the content of letters. Once you are old enough, you will understand that a a sheet fortress is not a camping tent.

WORLD

The game portrays an environment narrative. The story will only move forward when interacting with your surroundings. Dialogues can’t be skipped and actions are always given in pairs to choose.

The story moves forward through 5 chapters. In order to access the next chapter you must complete a quest and learn some skills. Between each chapter there are breakpoints which lead to a final cinematic that presents the next storyline and quest.

LIMITATIONS

In order to introduce small challenges and branches from the story, the character possesses a limited amount of energy. Once the energy deploys, the character will fall asleep. This limits the amount of choices you can make without the story moving forward.

This is a forced action that doesn’t affect the branching choices, but promises to keep the world exploration always exciting. It also prevents the limitless clicking on objects in the search for new content.

MULTI-ENDING

Memory reconstruction is affected by other concepts as emotional bias, imagination inflation or source confusion.

If the player never interacts with an object that provides information, they won’t be forced to do so. That means that they will never replace that memory with new information.

The ending will be determined by the amount of information the player has discovered before reaching the last level of the game.
